I was in New York for a few days this summer and was able to check out David Byrne’s Playing the Building Installation. An old pump organ serves as the interface to this large-scale instrument, and its keys are wired to solenoids and motors mounted on various parts of the structure of this amazing, empty ferry building. The beginnings of my project in Daniel Schmidt’s Instrument Building class. My vision is a hybrid of Asian zither (Qin, koto) and steel guitar. Of course it may very well end up being a plank with some strings on it…

And finally on Day 5 Agent Wilkes and I made the 4+ hour drive from Reno through the lovely Sierras and the Sacramento Valley and arrived at our destination - the tiny Oakland studio apartment seen above. I was surprised to learn that the kitchen is actually in a closet instead of being a separate room or even a section of the the main room. There is a big walk-in closet, though. And the apartment is in a neighborhood that I already like quite a lot. After we unloaded the truck I was dismayed to see that my belongings pretty much filled the room, but after the shelves were in place and boxes were emptied it actually turned out to be a very cozy and livable space - made possible by Agent Wilkes’ uncanny organization and unpacking skills.
