slapping water

Here is an improvised track played on a modular synth and recorded live to stereo, that makes me think of water bugs playing drums on the surface of a quiet lake.

Rod Poole 1962-2007

Last Sunday guitarist Pod Poole passed away. It is redundant to call any murder “a “senseless act of violence,” but this one was especially sickening.

Poole was a British-born guitar improvisor who had been living in L.A. His work was under-documented, but his brilliant synthesis of fingerstlye technique and just intonation has inspired me for many years. He played a Martin modified to make it possible to play in 11-limit just intonation - you may notice in the photo that there are 17 instead of the usual 12 frets to the octave. And while some might see that guitar and expect to hear harsh microtonal dissonance, in Poole’s hands this allows for music that really brings out the resonant potential of the acoustic guitar, and allows for much more to be said by playing fewer notes.

Here is an excerpt from the Rod Poole Trio recording Iasis. Poole is accompanied by two guitarists bowing drones on Martin guitars. If you like it, please buy one of his records. I only know of 4 that were released, and Iasis is now out of print.

Pykrete Percussion Unit

The Pykrete Percussion Unit is playing at Local 506 in Chapel Hill tomorrow, Wednesday May 16. We are opening for Tussle. DJ Nasty Boots will be there too.

The Unit (partly pictured above) consists of 8 or more percussionists, 2 bass clarinets, electronics and noise, all driven by a Roland 707 drum machine. This will be our third show and hopefully we will continue the trend of getting better with each performance.

On Friday I’ll be collaborating with some dancers at Soundscape Movement Fest at Nightlight.
